On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of the French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Europe marking a major turning point in World War II.
To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day, the Veterans History Project collected the stories of American servicemen and women who took part in the invasion. These stories represent the wide variety of individuals without whom D-Day would not have been a success. To experience history through their eyes, visit http://www.loc.gov/vets/stories/ex-war-dday-2014.html
