El Dia de Los Muertos and Halloween

October is almost over, and that means that two holidays are coming up. Halloween, on October 31st, probably springs to mind first for most Americans, but the festival of El Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, will also take place over the upcoming weekend.

Free Resources!

Hey, tutors! The Literacy Office has some extra books and materials that we no longer have space for. If you are looking for materials that your students can keep permanently, please stop by our office and take a look at what we have to offer! This is a great opportunity to build up your resources or your student's library. If you have any questions, please give us a call at 549-7400.

October Book Club

October's book for the Adult Learner Book Club is We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Shirley Jackson's 1962 novel, is full of a macabre and sinister humor, and Merricat herself, its amiable narrator, is one of the great unhinged heroines of literature. ‘What place would be better for us than this?’ she asks, of the neat, secluded realm she shares with her uncle and with her beloved older sister, Constance. ‘Who wants us, outside? The world is full of terrible people.’” (GoodReads)

Meet Our New Office Manager!

We have a new member of the Literacy Team! Kathryn Herron has recently started work as our new Office Manager. We are so happy to have her! We asked her to introduce herself:

My name is Kathryn Herron, and I am the new Administrative Assistant. I have worked for the Tulsa City-County Library for close to five years, working for the Circulation department. I look forward to getting to know all of you and learning as much as I can about the Literacy department. My email is kherron@tulsalibrary.org.

Don't Miss the Penguin Book Truck!

The Penguin Book Truck is back in Tulsa! If you didn't get a chance to visit the truck at Guthrie Green on Wednesday, you'll have another opportunity tonight at the First Friday Art Crawl in the Brady District. The Book Truck should be around from 6-9 offering all sorts of great Penguin books for sale. The best part, as far as we are concerned? They are donating a percentage of all their sales to the Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service! So, tell your friends, post it to Facebook, spread the word. We appreciate it!
