Did You Ever Wonder...?

Wonderopolis

Did you ever wonder... if your pet has a personality? That's just one of the daily wonders that are explored on Wonderopolis, a website for families with young children from the National Center for Family Literacy. We are so worried about kids' reading skills these days that we sometimes forget that kids need background knowledge to become readers too. It doesn't do any good if a kid learns to decode the word "personality" and has no idea what the word means!

Free Resource for Learning English as a Second Language

Pumarosa logo

Pumarosa.com is a free, bilingual, phonetic, and interactive English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) website for Spanish-speaking learners of all ages. It will help learners gain knowledge of English grammar, sentence structure, and will also strengthen their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The website encourages continuous participation. Pumarosa was designed to teach basic English to Spanish-speaking students, but its graded structure can be easily adapted for teaching English to learners whose first language is not Spanish.

Common Auditory Confusions

It can be difficult to help a learner with reading and spelling when either or both of you do not accurately distinguish between some of these tricky English sounds. It is time well spent --for tutor and learner alike--to focus on these basics so learners may begin the work of associating the sounds of English with the written representation. This focus on sounds comes before phonics and is termed "Phonemic Awareness".
