The book for January is The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls-Wilder.

“The town of De Smet is hit with terrible, howling blizzards and Laura and her family must ration their food and coal. When the supply train doesn't arrive, Almanzo Wilder and his brother realize something must be done. They begin an impossible journey in search of provisions, before it's too late. “(Source: Goodreads)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! The Florida Literacy Coalition's blog has some fun Thanksgiving activities listed, including this game. You must find the key and unlock the kitchen door to escape in time for Thanksgiving!

Digital Recorders

Did you know that the Ruth G Hardman Literacy Service has digital voice recorders available for checkout? Tutors and learners can use these recorders in a variety of ways, including practicing pronunciation, reviewing previous lessons, exploring letter sounds, and recording life stories for later transcription.

If you are a tutor or literacy student and you are interested in checking out one of our digital voice recorders, contact the Literacy Office at 549-7400. We can arrange to have the recorder sent to your local library for your use.

Changes in the GED

Did you know the GED will be changing in January 2014? A new test will be offered that has been updated to reflect what students are learning in high school. The new test will only be available to take via a computer.

The Literacy Office will be updating all our GED preparation materials, and several staff members have received training on the new GED, so please feel free to contact us with questions.

More information on the new test, and how it differs from the old test, can be found here.
