Free Dyslexia Screenings

Not all reading difficulties are caused by dyslexia. Dyslexia is not just a reading issue but also a neurological disorder that extends beyond reading difficulties. If you or someone you know might be struggling with dyslexia, the Dyslexia Institutes of America is offering free Dyslexia screenings:

I am 44 years old and i struggle with reading and and numbers? is there help for me as far as maybe getting a diagnosis?

Hi, Cynthia,

Thank you for your question. You are not alone. Millions of adults struggle with reading and numbers. There are many different kinds of doctors that can medically diagnose someone with a learning disability, including psychometrists, clinical psychologists, and some neuropsychologists.

If you suspect you might have a learning disability, speak to your regular physician about your options. You might also check out the Learning Disabilities Association of America at http://www.ldanatl.org/ for helpful resources, accomodation techniques, and answers to frequently asked questions.

my daughter is 16 years old and has been having trouble in school for some time now. I have read some of the symptoms of Dyslexia and would like to have her tested. Could you tell me who I could call to have her tested?

Hi Chris,

If your daughter attends public school, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) provides for free testing and special education services for children with learning disabilities. The National Center for Learning Disabilities provides a comprehensive parent guide to IDEA, which you can find here: http://www.ncld.org/parents-child-disabilities/idea-guide.

In addition to consulting with the school system, we suggest that she speaks to her regular physician about her symptoms. Primary care physicians have intimate knowledge about the health of their patients and should be able to recommend the appropriate referral.
