From Outside It May Look Like Nothing is Happening But ...

Take a look at this photo of the first floor where the Central Library Media Center was located.  Looking south you can see the former location of the Volunteer Office, and on the right the Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service, both now located at 2901 S. Harvard.

Central's Main Floor is Now Difficult to Recognize!

The photo at the left shows the main or second floor where the fountain was located, under the staircase leading to the third floor.  Crews have cleared the fourth and third floors.  Removal of walls and ceilings on the first floor is nearly complete.

Demolition Removes Familiar Spaces

The photo on the left shows where the Filling Station and Storytime Room were located on the Central Library's main floor. This space on the southeast corner will be the location of the new Cafe. Through the window on the right you will see the newly opened Fifth Street, and the window on the left will be replaced by doors to the Cafe's outdoor seating area.

Demolition and abatement well underway at the Central Library.

Demolition and abatement at the Central Library is running smoothly, with the 4th and 3rd floors now completely cleared.  Abatement is nearly complete in the sub-basement.  Demolition is almost complete on the 1st floor and crews will soon be moving to the second floor.

Once the clearing is complete, renovation will begin in late Spring.

Central Library's Circulating Collection

While Central Library has closed for its exciting two-year renovation, it’s circulating collection of books, music and movies are still available for our customers to place holds on and have delivered to their neighborhood branch library.

When you visit the library catalog and discover an item you desire located at the Annex, simply Place a Hold, select your Pickup Location and that item will be delivered for you.
