Social Worker in the Library

Open Book

Some customers utilizing Tulsa City-County Library's Central Library are homeless, mentally ill, or have addictions and behavioral issues that are against library regulations and policies, and can present safety and security issues for library staff and other patrons.

Last summer TCCL added a Family and Children's Services social worker to work twenty hours a week at Central. The result? The number of behavioral incidents reported in July and August 2012 dropped by 57% compared to those months in 2011. A $20,000 grant from the Zarrow Family Foundation was awarded to the Tulsa Library Trust to fund Social Worker in the Library services at TCCL beginning this January. In addition to working with library customers, our social worker will offer training to staff to improve and increase their skills in working with challenging library customers.
