TCCL’s Central Library receives 2018 Library Building Award

TCCL’s Central Library continues to receive national awards for its beauty and sustainability.
Central Library was one of six libraries in the United States to receive the 2018 American Institute of Architects and the American Library Association’s Library Building Awards for excellence in architectural design.
As lead architects, MSR Design, reimagined the original 1965 design to the needs of a 21st-century library user. The library redesign was noted for adding a large outdoor activity space, simplifying customer entry and dramatically increasing parking availability through a parking garage with an enclosed link to the library.
The award committee added,
“New cast stone panels, refurbished public art, and a thorough cleaning honor the library’s original 1965 design. Beyond the adult stacks and destination children’s area inside, the library features a mix of spaces where people can meet and collaborate. The plaza itself now features pervious pavers and ample seating surrounded by vegetation.”
A six-member jury selected this year’s award recipients. The jury described the Central Library renovation as “elegant and timeless.” One juror noted that the project “maximizes and revitalizes the surrounding neighborhood, which would inspire me to visit more often just to experience its beauty.”
