Memorial Day: A Look Into History

Hello, readers! Memorial Day is coming up, and I wanted to share a little bit about the history of the holiday and a few book recommendations.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday to honor and mourn the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This holiday began all the way back during the Civil War era, and the first Memorial Day commemoration was on May 30, 1868. To learn more about Memorial Day history, you can search the call number 394.2 in the juvenile nonfiction section of your library.

Below, I have listed a few more beautifully illustrated books about Memorial Day and of stories that surround Memorial Day that you can check out:

A Day For Rememberin' is a book inspired by the first Memorial Day and follows a young boy named Eli as he joins his family and others in honoring the fallen Union soldiers.

The Poppy Lady is about a woman named Moina Belle Michael and how she began the tradition of using red poppy flowers as a symbol of remembrance.
