One of my favorite awards to pay attention to every year is the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for the most distinguished beginning reader book.
This year, Stop! Bot! is the winner. Written and illustrated by James Yang, it features easy to decode sentences and delightful illustrated surprises (lots of interesting things to see in the windows of the featured building!). The award committee chair commented: "Captivating illustrations featuring diversity and inclusion, this book is a fun accessible read for beginning readers."
Three other Geisel Honor Books were also named:
- Chick and Brain: Smell My Foot! written and illustrated by Cece Bell
- Flubby Is Not a Good Pet! written and illustrated by J.E. Morris
- The Book Hog written and illustrated by Greg Pizzoli
If your child is ready to start reading on their own but chapter books are too intimidating, these and past Geisel Award winners are an excellent place to start!
