   Tulsa City-County Library and the Hispanic Resource Center promotes and celebrates Hispanic culture year-round. During September and October, Hispanic Heritage Month provides additional opportunities for TCCL to share and honor the many colorful traditions of Hispanic heritage. 

   Programs ranging from crafts and book clubs to an exhibition with Tulsa Arts Fellow Francheska Alcantara will be offered starting Sept. 10 at TCCL locations across the county and the Philbrook Museum of Art. The celebrations will conclude on Oct. 29 with the inaugural Hummingbird Award in Literary Arts honoring Benjamin Alire Saenz. 

   The annual celebration is coordinated by TCCL’s Hispanic Resource Center, which provides cultural, informational and educational resources, as well as activities and services for both Spanish- and English-speaking families. The center was established to meet the educational and cultural needs of Tulsa County’s growing Hispanic community. 

   Free events include: 

“Community Dialogue: How Frida Taught Us To Paint Our Realities”: Saturday, Sept. 10; 1-2:30 p.m.; Philbrook Museum of Art, 2727 S. Rockford Road. Join TCCL’s Hispanic Resource Center for a panel discussion with Latinx artists VNICE and Ana Barros, community leaders and curators as they delve into the influence and radical nature of the artistic movements in the United States and in Latin America, especially during the time period when Frida Kahlo was active. For all ages. 

“Genealogy Detectives: Researching Latinx American Ancestors”: Thursday, Sept. 15; 10-11 a.m.; Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St.. Using TCCL's Researching Hispanic/Latinx American Ancestors handout as a guide, the Genealogy Center will give an overview of free online resources to begin your Latinx family history research. “Take-and-Make Crafts”: Thursday, Sept. 15; 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Nathan Hale Library, 6038 E. 23rd St. Stop by and grab a kit to create your own paper mola! For all ages. 

“Jenks Book Club”: Thursday, Sept. 16; 6-7 p.m.; Jenks Library, 523 W. B St. Join fellow book lovers to discuss the award-winning YA novel in verse ”The Poet X” by Elizabeth Acevedo. For adults. 

“Latino Reads With the Sista’ Chat Book Club”: Saturday, Sept. 17; noon-2 p.m.; Suburban Acres Library, 4606 N. Garrison Ave. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a book discussion featuring the Latinx title “The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina” by Zoraida Córdova. For adults. 

“Ears to the Ground Discussion: The Power of Stories”: Thursday, Sept. 29; 6:30-8 p.m.; Rudisill Regional Library, 1520 N. Hartford Ave. This conversation and dialogue will feature Tulsa Artist Fellow Francheska Alcantara as well as fellow community organizers, historians and experts on people and the stories they tell. For all ages. 

 “Graphic Novel Club”: Tuesday, Oct. 4; 3:30-4:30 p.m.; Martin Regional Library, 2601 S. Garnett Road. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and Teens Read Month by discussing “Miss Quinces” by Kat Fajardo and doing some crafting. For ages 10-13.  

 “Cover to Cover Book Club”: Tuesday, Oct. 4; 6:30-7:15 p.m.; Broken Arrow Library, 300 W. Broadway. Explore “The Five Wounds” by Kirstin Valdez Quade through lively discussion and literary fun. For adults. 

 “Exchanging Horizons: Opening Exhibition and Reception”: Thursday, Oct. 6; 6-7 p.m.; Martin Regional Library. Join the Hispanic Resource Center for a reception to launch the monthlong exhibition of "Exchanging Horizons" with Tulsa Artist Fellow Francheska Alcántara. The exhibition will remain on display at Martin Regional Library until Oct. 31. In conjunction with TCCL’s African American Resource Center. 

 “Cafecito, Libros y Chisme: Latina-Focused Book Club”: Wednesday, Oct. 12; 6:30-7:30 p.m.; Martin Regional Library. Join the library in discussing “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” by Erika L. Sánchez. For ages 16 and up. 

 “Ears to the Ground: Story Sharing Workshop”: Thursday, Oct. 13; 6-7:30 p.m.; Nathan Hale Library. Tulsa Artist Fellow Francheska Alcántara will help attendees craft their own stories. For teens and adults. 

“Inaugural Hummingbird Award in Literary Arts Honoring Benjamin Alire Saenz”: Saturday, Oct. 29; 10:30 a.m.-noon; Central Library, Fifth Street and Denver Avenue. Sáenz, an award-winning American author of poetry and prose for adults and teens, and a writer of books for children, will receive the inaugural Hummingbird Award in Literary Arts, talk about his life and writings, and sign books.
