Mission

The George Miksch Sutton Avian Research Center (Sutton Center) was founded in 1983 with the mission of finding cooperative conservation solutions for birds and the natural world through science and education. The Sutton Center is a private, nonprofit organization located near Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

The Sutton Center is a leader in avian research and conservation though conducting intensive, conservation-oriented, ecological field research on declining grassland birds, developing and applying techniques for the reintroduction and monitoring of Southern Bald Eagles, managing the successful captive breeding of endangered species and performing bird surveys in Oklahoma and across the world.

Programs and Services

  • Eagle Web Camera (get up close and personal with a family of bald eagles), Captive breeding for the critically endangered masked bobwhite and the Attwater's prairie-chicken, statewide bird surveys to determine the health and distribution of Oklahoma's breeding birds.
  • Wildlife conservation STEM education programs with live birds (onsite and in the schools/community)
  • Mobile interactive displays
  • Internships for high school, college and graduate students, citizen scientist opportunities, Bald Eagle monitoring,
  • Shooting demonstrations to illustrate the benefits of non-lead ammunition to wildlife
  • Annual statewide high school wildlife art competition for 9-12th grade students

The Sutton Center is not a zoo and our birds are not on public display. If you would like to see the incredible conservation work happening here we are happy to arrange a tour. We welcome volunteers individually or as a group. To arrange a time to discuss volunteering, please contact the Center.
