March 26, 2024 - The annual Friends of the Helmerich Library book sale features five days to find your favorite new books.
The book sale begins with a special preview night for Friends of the Helmerich Library (FOHL) members on April 11, 5-8 p.m. at Helmerich Library, 5131 E. 91st St. Anyone may join the FOHL through a donation of $5 for an individual or $10 for a family. The sale continues Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on April 12 and 13 and April 19 and 20.
“The organization has been running a used book sale since 2004, making this the 20-year anniversary of offering used books at affordable prices to Tulsans. We’re so glad that this event is still so popular and resonates with the community,” said Bailey James, president of the FOHL. “My mother was one of the founding members of the organization back in 2001 and I’m so proud that we still see such a great turnout and are able to raise so much money. I’ve been helping out with this sale since I was a child and have gotten to see it grow and gain popularity. We frequently hear patrons say they look forward to this sale all year!”
Thousands of used books, CDs, DVDs and albums are available for purchase. Prices are kept low to encourage books to find new homes, with hardbacks selling for $2, trade paperbacks for $1, children’s hardbacks for $1, children’s paperbacks for $0.50, DVDs for $2, and other items for even less. Unique and rare items are specially priced. Teachers who bring their school IDs on Fridays and Saturdays receive 50 percent off their purchases, and the final Saturday afternoon of the fundraiser features a popular “bag sale” event where patrons can pay $5 for anything they can fit into a paper grocery bag.
The sale offers books across all genres, including fiction, nonfiction, children's and young adult, biography, mystery, spiritual/religious, science fiction, fantasy, self-help, history, business, gardening, crafts, and cooking, so there's something for everyone. Materials are sorted by category for easy browsing.
All proceeds from the sale go toward improvements to Helmerich Library and funding grants for special programming at other Tulsa City-County Library locations. Since its inception, the Friends of the Helmerich Library have raised over $150,000 through their sale, which has helped provide funding for summer reading program prizes and programming to nurture the love of literacy for all ages.
