As part of Tulsa City-County Library’s “One Book, One Tulsa” initiative exploring food, health, gardening and sustainability, “Now Read This Take Five: The Food Edition” will focus on the role food plays in our lives. Indulge your appetite for good reads, good eats and good conversations July 24, 7 p.m. in Central Library’s Aaronson Auditorium, Fourth Street and Denver Avenue.
Five local presenters will speak for five minutes about five books that have made a difference in their lives. Topics will include the art of cooking, food in fiction, hunger and food policy, mind and body wellness, gardening and sustainability.
Participants also can bring a cookbook to swap and a nonperishable food item to donate to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.
Speakers and topics are:
- Eileen Bradshaw, executive director of the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma; food policy, hunger and helping those in need
- Heather Oakley, executive director of Global Gardens; gardening and sustainability issues
- Tamara Lebak, associate minister at All Souls Unitarian Church; mind and body wellness
- Molly Martin, Antoinette Baking Company; five can’t-live-without cookbooks
- Rebecca Howard, Readers’ Librarian at Central Library; food in fiction
“Participants can expect lightning speed book talks, one-minute each, on a diversity of titles. Topics include mind and body wellness, food policy and hunger, the symbolic role of food in fiction, must-have cookbooks, and the art and science of gardening. Anyone who eats should come to this event!” said Rebecca Howard, program coordinator. “Highlighted titles and those similar will be available for check-out, and you may also bring a cookbook to swap. We’re particularly excited to sponsor a food drive for the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.”
