Tulsa City-County Library was awarded the 2017 Henry Bellmon Sustainability Award for its Central Library Renewed project.
The statewide annual awards are granted through a partnership with Sustainable Tulsa and the Tulsa Southside Rotary Club and Foundation. The organizations strive to raise awareness and reward individuals, organizations and companies dedicated to quality of life, responsible economic growth and environmental stewardship.
“Libraries are often thought of as very quiet places. It was our intention with this project to really shake things up and make some noise and be a leader in the Tulsa community and show what good environmental practices are,” said Michael Leitch, TCCL’s capital projects manager. “We have several sustainable factors that were included in the project such as solar panels on the roof, high-efficiency lighting, the chilled beam heating and air conditioning system, high-efficiency boilers and chillers and rainwater collection system.”
Central Library Renewed was a three year, $55-million project where the 50-year-old library was completely gutted to the original architectural bones and redesigned to benefit people and the planet. During the construction project more than 900-cubic-yards of construction waste was diverted from landfills. A local facility sorted the waste and sent it to different facilities for recycling, reuse and repurposing.
