Tulsa City-County Library, in partnership with Booksmart Tulsa and Magic City Books, presents “Getting Personal With Author Rilla Askew,” July 10, 7-8:30 p.m. in Central Library’s Pocahontas Greadington Learning & Creativity Center, Fourth Street and Denver Avenue. Askew, an award-winning author from Oklahoma, will talk about her career and works as well as her first nonfiction collection, Most American: Notes from a Wounded Place. Published this year, Askew’s essays reflect on Oklahoma’s complex history as a microcosm of our national saga as Americans, from the Trail of Tears and Tulsa Race Riot to the Murrah Federal Building bombing. Askew is the author of four novels and a book of stories. She’s a PEN/Faulkner finalist, recipient of the Western Heritage Award, Oklahoma Book Award, and a 2009 Arts and Letters Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her novel about the Tulsa Race Riot, Fire in Beulah, received the American Book Award in 2002, and was selected for Oklahoma’s One Book One State reading program. Askew’s essays and short fiction have appeared in publications such as Tin House, World Literature Today, Nimrod, Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards. Askew’s visit is part of TCCL’s adult summer reading program. Now, through Aug. 5, adults can sign up to read four books and receive a wooden tower game as well as a coupon booklet for free food and entertainment around the area.
