Tulsa City-County Library Kicks Off Summer Reading Program with a Young Readers Graduation Ceremony

Hundreds of Tulsa County children will be celebrated this month for their commitment to reading and learning at their local library. As they get ready to enter their school-age years, the library wants to send them off in style and celebrate their bright futures to come.

A special “Build a Reader” graduation is set for May 24, 10 a.m. at Hardesty Regional Library’s Connor’s Cove, 8316 E. 93rd St. A celebration will follow all of the songs, stories and activities at storytime. Every family will receive a prize pack and snacks as well. This event is sponsored by the Tulsa Library Trust and the Flint Family Foundation.

Through TCCL’s Build a Reader program, parents and young children build a foundation for literacy by participating in these five activities: talking, playing, singing, reading and writing. Research shows that regularly doing these five activities will prepare your child to enter kindergarten with better language and learning comprehension skills.

“We have families who have been bringing their children to library storytimes almost from birth,” said Laura Raphael, TCCL children’s services coordinator. “Now, these children are getting ready for the next stage in their growth and development: School!”

These new graduates will certainly be ready for TCCL’s summer reading program beginning May 29-Aug. 4. All ages can read their way to prizes and free local entertainment coupons.

TCCL offers storytimes throughout the year at its 24 locations and they are all free. For more information on library programs and activities, call the AskUs Hotline, 918-549-7323 or visit the library’s website, www.tulsalibrary.org.
