Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month  with Tulsa City-County Library

   Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Tulsa City-County Library during a month-long series honoring the colorful traditions of the Hispanic culture.

   From movie nights and Salsa dancing lessons to a visit from award-winning author and illustrator Angela Dominguez, these free family events are a celebration for everyone.

   The annual celebration is coordinated by TCCL’s Hispanic Resource Center, located at the Martin Regional Library, 2601 S. Garnett Road.  The Hispanic Resource Center provides cultural, informational and educational resources, as well as activities and services for both Spanish-and English-speaking families.  The center was established to meet the educational and cultural needs of Tulsa County’s growing Hispanic community.

   Enjoy these free events planned at various TCCL locations:

“Noche Mexicana/Mexican Fiesta” Sept. 15, 7-9 p.m., Kendall-Whittier Library, 21 S. Lewis. Enjoy mariachi music by Santo Domingo, piñatas for kids, plus chips and salsa. Bring a lawn chair and relax.

 “Drumming with a Latin Beat with John Dellavedova” Kids can move to the Latin groove and experiment with some funky percussion instruments.

 “Tell Your Story with Music: Synth Sounds” Combine science and music to learn how to make your own synth music using LittleBits synth kits. For ages 10-14.

“Movie in the Garden: La Bamba” Sept. 20, 7-9 p.m., Central Library, 400 Civic Center, AR and Marylouise Tandy Foundation Children’s Garden. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a movie in the garden featuring the inspiring and music-filled look at the all-to-brief life of Richie Valens. Bring your chairs and blankets.

“Salsa Lessons” Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St., Curious about learning the salsa dance? Learn the basics with beginning salsa lessons from the Tulsalseros.

“Festival Americas” Sept. 22 and 23, Guthrie Green Park, 111 E. Brady St.  Celebrate the culture of the Americas through live music, dance performances, Latin cuisine, art exhibits and much more. Make sure to visit TCCL’s booth for resources and activities.

 

“Ballet Folklorico Tonatiuh” Enjoy the colorful and enchanting traditional dances of Mexico artfully performed by Ballet Folklorico Tonatiuh.

“Tell Your Story with Music: Angela Dominguez” Oct. 12, 6:30-8 p.m., Martin Regional Library. This family friendly evening features mariachi music and a fascinating presentation by award-winning author and illustrator Angela Dominguez. Her new children’s book, Sing, Don’t Cry, shares the story of Dominguez’s musician grandfather and the importance of sharing music together as a family.

   Hispanic Heritage Month programs are sponsored by the Tulsa City-County Library’s Hispanic Resource Center and Tulsa Library Trust.
