Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum and Oklahoma Senator Dave Rader will kick off National Friends of Libraries Week on Central Library’s main staircase, Monday, Oct. 16 at 11:30 a.m. Tulsa City-County Library CEO Kimberly Johnson and Friends of Tulsa City-County Libraries president Debora Riggs Grillot will also share remarks.
Following the kickoff, as part of the “Books Sandwiched In” review series, Senator Rader will review J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy, in Central Library’s Aaronson Auditorium at 12:10 p.m. Started in 1967, “Books Sandwiched In” is the longest running annual program by Friends of Tulsa City-County Libraries.
Founded in 1957, Friends of the Tulsa City-County Libraries is a nonprofit organization dedicated to aiding and promoting the activities and goals of the Tulsa City-County Library system. Some of the Friends’ many activities include:
· Funding scholarships for library staff to continue their education
· Supporting early literacy through the First Book program
· Hosting an annual celebration to recognize the TCCL’s many dedicated volunteers
· Presenting the Adult Creative Writing Contest to encourage and support local authors
· Providing food and hospitality for TCCL staff during the library’s annual professional development day
