Teen Read Month is an annual event aimed at encouraging teens to read for the fun of it.  This is the perfect time to break away from textbooks and enjoy programs designed for them.

   Events are planned around Tulsa City-County Libraries to showcase library resources for young adults.  Programs are designed to offer entertainment as well as a dose of education.

   Teens also can get a special library card during the month.  The Hardesty Family Foundation is sponsoring the cards featuring artwork from last year’s winners of the library’s Anime art competition.

   Fun and educational programs include:

Monster Movie, Oct. 18, 4-6 p.m. Suburban Acres Library, 4606 N. Garrison.  From book to the big screen, join us for a movie that came from the library.

Thai String Toys and Monster Bookmarks, Oct. 19, 2-4 p.m. Owasso Library, 103 W. Broadway.  Come and make Thai string toys and monster bookmarks, enjoy root-beer floats and preview some book trailers.

Get Caught Reading Day, Oct. 20, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Suburban Acres Library.  Get caught reading and receive a thank-you gift and surprise.

Zombie Mayhem, Oct. 22, 4-5 p.m. Martin Regional Library, 2601 S. Garnett Road.  Chat about your favorite monsters from books and movies, challenge your friends at zombie-themed games and vampire jeopardy, plus chow down on werewolf kibble and other snacks.

UFO Photos, Oct. 23, 4-5 p.m. at the Broken Arrow Library, 300 W. Broadway.  Unidentified Flying Objects spotted in Broken Arrow.  Design and create a flying saucer to hoax your very own UFO sighting.

Zombie Prom Featuring Best-Selling Author Carrie Ryan, Oct. 25, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Helmerich Library, 5131 E. 91st St.  Zombies love prom almost as much as brains.  The prom features a zombie costume and walk-off contest, an apocalypse survival box challenge, zombie peg doll crafts and a zombie prom photo station.  Ryan is the New York Times best-selling author of “The Forest of Hands and Teeth” series and will talk all about zombies, writing and her books.  A book signing will follow.  Seating is limited.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Helmerich Library and Tulsa Library Trust.

Zombie Attack, Oct. 30, 3:30-5 p.m. Skiatook Library, 316 E. Rogers. Get a zombie makeover and prepare for a zombie attack.

Get Your Ghostly Game On, Oct. 30, 5-7 p.m. Schusterman-Benson Library, 3333 E. 32nd Place. Come in costume and enjoy creepy snacks, ghostly games and much more.  There will be a prize for best costume.

Dare to Come to the Library for the Fun of It!, Oct. 31, 2:30-4:30 p.m., South Broken Arrow Library, 3600 S. Chestnut.  Meet new friends, play games, join the Teen Advisory Board and solve the mystery of the missing book.

Character Costume Contest, Oct. 31, 4-5:30 p.m., Charles Page Library, 551 E. Fourth Street.  Come dressed as your favorite character from a book.  There will be Halloween candy and decorations.  The most elaborate and most authentic costume wins a prize.

Mummy Wrap Contest, Oct. 31, 4-6 p.m. Suburban Acres Library.  Make a mummy and win a prize for the top creations.
