Tulsa is one of the top cities in the country when it comes to literacy.
The prestigious Central Connecticut State University’s recently released 2013 Most Literate Cities study ranks Tulsa No. 9 in library services, moving up one spot from 2012. Tulsa remains in the Top 25 Most Literate Cities in the overall study, having slipped two spots to No. 24. Neighboring Oklahoma City ranked No. 51.
“It is an honor and great achievement by library staff to be featured among the top libraries in the United States,” said Gary Shaffer, Tulsa City-Count Library chief executive officer. “Our daily work at the library focuses on enhancing the quality of life for the residents of Tulsa County. To be recognized as a top library reflects our mission that ‘Libraries Change Lives.’”
Libraries and locally produced publications were the two measures vaulting Tulsa into the Top 25. Tulsa City-County Library’s resources and accessibility have regularly placed Tulsa among the Top 10 libraries in the country. The city of Tulsa has consistently ranked in the Top 25 in the overall study since it was first initiated in 2003.
America’s Most Literate Cities study attempts to capture one critical index of our nation’s social health – the literacy of its major cities with population counts of 250,000 and above. The study focuses on six key indicators of literacy: number of bookstores, educational attainment, Internet access, library resources, periodical publishing resources and newspaper circulation.
