Vanessa Hall-Harper issues reading challenge to children in her district

Tulsa’s District 1 Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper wants to reward summer reading with a children’s barbeque party.

To encourage local children to participate in Tulsa City-County Library’s summer reading program, Hall-Harper will challenge children to increase summer reading program participation by 5 percent or more over last year. If young readers in her district meet the challenge at Rudisill Regional and Suburban Acres Libraries, they will earn an end-of-summer party with hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and drinks. And, for dessert, Councilor Hall-Harper will get a pie to the face all in good fun!

Hall-Harper will personally issue the challenge at Suburban Acres Library, 4606 N. Garrison, Friday, June 2 at 1 p.m. After her announcement, families can enjoy the free program “Time to Get Funky With Sugar Free Allstars.”

The summer reading program is a fun way to keep students reading throughout the summer to help retain and improve their reading skills. The program goes beyond the books by offering hundreds of free programs to expand the imagination. Performers and presenters from Tulsa and across the U.S. participate to help bring books to life. Children, as well as adults, will enjoy performances from Sugar Free Allstars, Mr. Stinky Feet, Jack and Kitty Norton, Monty Harper, Lucky Diaz, Tommy Terrific and many more entertaining and educational performers.

By visiting the library four times and reading eight books, children will earn a medal of achievement and a coupon booklet for free food and entertainment. By reading 12 more books for a total of 20, children will earn a bonus prize: birth to pre-K receive a Jacob’s Ladder toy and children in kindergarten-5th grade receive a plush beaver toy.
