County residents, Tulsa City-County Library customers and stakeholders are invited to the unveiling of concepts for the reimagining of the Central Library, Fourth Street and Denver Avenue.
A public meeting is scheduled for Nov. 5, 6-7 p.m. in Central Library’s Aaronson Auditorium. Project leads Jeffrey Scherer, founding architect, and Traci Lesneski, principal of interiors, for Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle Ltd. (MS&R), will share building plans that will provide leading-edge library service now and into the future. Participants will have the opportunity to share their thoughts for the building’s future with staff, as well as with the architects and designers.
The renovation of the mid-century modern architecture building seeks to renew the library’s identity and role in the community, as well as remedy the building’s outdated and worn infrastructure. The once state-of-the-art building, opened in 1965, is approaching its 50th anniversary. At present, the mechanical systems are aged, the building features little in the way of energy efficiency and the technology is cobbled together. The plans call for opening within its walls a new kind of library, one where 21st century customers can not only engage in lifelong learning, but also where they can convene, collaborate and create.
The Central Library serves as the core for the entire countywide library system. It has more visitors annually than any other library in the system (416,532 visits); it hosts more than 875 programs and events every year.
