Plan a visit to Central Library during May and see “Mirage: An Art Experience with Rachel Hayes, Tulsa Artist Fellow.”
This special art installation by Hayes, internationally exhibited member of the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, features large, colorful fiber pieces floating above the library’s first floor. This experience also features a video created by the artist which will screen in the A.R. and Marylouise Tandy Foundation Children’s Garden throughout the month. A book display with artist references is underneath the art installation.
Hayes will present “Fiber-Art Workshop” on Wednesday, May 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Central Library’s Maker Space. She will lead adults in this hands-on workshop on sewing patchwork pieces on a sewing machine to make their own art. Seating is limited on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Hayes received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute in Fiber and went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She has attended the Marie Walsh Sharpe Space Program in Brooklyn, New York; the Sculpture Space Residency, New York; the Art Omi International Artists’ Residency in Omi, New York, and the Roswell Artist-in-Residence program in Roswell, NM. Hayes is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Award in Painting and Sculpture, an Augustus Saint-Gaudens Memorial Fellowship in Sculpture, a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Fellowship in Sculpture, a Virginia Commission for the Arts Fellowship in Sculpture, and a Charlotte Street Fund Award. Her work has been covered by The New York Times, The Cut, Interior Design, Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Art Forum and Art Papers, and she was a featured in the new documentary “Being Missoni.” She has shown her work at the Sculpture Center in New York; Taubman Museum of Art, Virginia; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas; Roswell Museum of Art, New Mexico; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana; Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, New Hampshire; and in Lower Manhattan, New York City, with BravinLee Programs. Hayes has completed large commissions for Facebook Headquarters in Palo Alto, CA, Bloomberg Headquarters in NY, NY, the Rosslyn Business Improvement District in Washington D.C., and for Artsbeat in Columbus, Georgia.
She recently completed several collaborative projects with the Italian fashion house Missoni by creating installations in Milan, IT, New York, NY and New Mexico, culminating with a solo exhibition in conjunction with MIART and Milan Design Week.
