Tulsa City-County Library Celebrates Teen Read Month

Teen Read Month is a national celebration for teens to read for the fun of it - a chance to break away from the textbooks and enjoy programs designed for them.

Free events and author visits are planned throughout Tulsa City-County libraries to showcase library resources for young adults.  Programs are designed to offer entertainment as well as a dose of education.

Two popular authors will visit Tulsa libraries as a special bonus for Teen Read Month:

“Meet Zoraida Cordova” Oct. 6, 7 p.m. at Hardesty Regional Library’s Connor’s Cove, 8316 E. 93rd St.  Enjoy an evening with Cordova, author of The Vicious Deep, The Savage Blue and The Vast and Brutal Sea.  Her latest book, Labyrinth Lost, creates a stunning world using Latin American mythology and spinning a haunting tale of power, wonder and growth.  A question-and-answer session will follow her presentation.  Books will be available for purchasing.

“Meet Author A.S. King” Oct. 27, 7p.m. at Central Library’s Aaronson Auditorium, 400 Civic Center.  King is best known for her award-winning young adult novels.  Please Ignore Vera Dietz was awarded a 2011 Michael L. Printz Honor Book, and was an Edgar Award Nominee.  She awarded the 2013 Las Angeles Times Book Prize for Ask the Passengers.  King’s latest book, Still Life With Tornado, will be released Oct. 11.  A question-and-answer session will follow her presentation.  Books will be available for purchasing.

“Every October, the American Library Association presents Teen Read Week as an initiative to encourage teens to read for fun.  At TCCL, we like that idea so much that we celebrate for the entire month,” said Leah Weyand, Tulsa City-County Library’s teen services coordinator.  “Teens have so many options for entertainment, so it’s important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure.  Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce.  There are so many possibilities that exist within the doors of the library and within the covers of books.  Plus, teens get an extra bonus during the month by receiving free replacement library cards as well as having late fees waived.”
