Tulsa Ranked No. 9 in Library Services in 2013 Most Literate Cities Study

     Tulsa is one of the top cities in the country when it comes to literacy.    The prestigious Central Connecticut State University’s recently released 2013 Most Literate Cities study ranks Tulsa No. 9 in library services, moving up one spot from 2012.  Tulsa remains in the Top 25 Most Literate Cities in the overall study, having slipped two spots to No. 24.  Neighboring Oklahoma City ranked No. 51.

Tulsa City-County Library Expands Free Music Download Service

     Tulsa City-County Library is helping library customers connect with the music they enjoy by expanding a popular music service.    Beginning this week, library cardholders will have two additional Freegal Music downloads per week.  Now, each week you can select 5 songs from dozens of genres and more than 7-million songs from 10,000 music labels, including Sony Music Entertainment.  Freegal Music is designed for all musical preferences.  New songs and labels are added weekly to keep the selection current.

Paper Airplane Fly-Off Set to Soar at Schusterman-Benson Library

   Soar into an early spring with the “Paper Airplane Fly-Off,” Feb. 3, 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Schusterman-Benson Library, 3333 E. 32nd Place. This free event is for ages 5-12.    Learn new designs, such as the Arrow, Dart, Hoop Glider and Whirlybird, or create your own aerodynamic marvel.  There will be books on various designs to help with the precision folding.  Special prizes will be awarded for distance and design.

Girl Scout Cookie Box Construction Contest Takes Shape at Hardesty Regional Library

    Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St., will transform as a roomful of emerging female engineers use 3,000 empty Girl Scout Cookie boxes to build designs inspired by the 2014 Sochi Olympics.    Six teams will begin construction Saturday, Jan. 25 at 10:30 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.  Judging will be based on originality, creativity, technical difficulty, teamwork and advanced meeting with their mentor.  Prizes will be awarded at gold, silver and bronze levels.

Suburban Acres Library Presents African-American History Month Essay Contest

     In honor of African-American History Month, Suburban Acres Library, 4606 N. Garrison, is hosting an essay contest for students in grades five through seven.    The theme is “An African-American of the 21st century is important to me because he/she has…”  Essays must be 1-2 well-developed paragraphs and no more than two pages in length.  Submissions must include a cover page and be neatly printed or typed.  A computer is available for use at any Tulsa City-County Library.

   Join local religious leaders and experts as they address the topic “The Challenge of Civil Discourse: Religious Passion, Extremism and the Problem of Perception” at the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice’s 2014 Interfaith Trialogue Series in February.    Sponsored by OCCJ and funded in part by the Tulsa Library Trust’s Alfred E. Aaronson Lecture Series Endowment, the three-part discussion series is scheduled on Sundays, Feb. 2, Feb. 9 and Feb. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at varying locations.
